HIMSS 2019: In a Word, Reimbursement

By February 12, 2019September 5th, 2019Blog, RPM

As the 2019 HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition is underway this week in Orlando, more than 45,000 professionals from more than 90 countries will gather to see and hear what’s new in education and innovation around information and technology in the healthcare industry.

And within the more than 300 education sessions, spanning interoperability, personalized healthcare, cybersecurity and analytics, we expect one underlying message will predominate: reimbursement.

With a new focus on reimbursement around remote patient monitoring from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) this year (and more to come next year), the door has been opened for providers to invest in technology solutions that allow care to happen where patient’s prefer to stay – in their homes.

“This provides opportunities for patients around communicating with providers remotely…” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “This is in terms of increasing access and it’s also a great example of some of the efforts that we’re trying to make around supporting innovation. This has been happening in the private market and I think the opportunities and the impact could be tremendous.”

A recent report from Frost & Sullivan summarizes the catalysts that led to this change: “The US healthcare payment structure is rapidly shifting from a fee-for-service model to a value-based reimbursement (VBR) structure, [but] despite widespread VBR adoption, complex chronic disease states pose a major obstacle for health care providers shifting toward value-based care. Remote patient monitoring, chronic care management, wellness tracking, and personal emergency response systems (PERS) are high-demand capabilities to support healthcare and wellness needs in the home.”

The concept of in-home care is one that Clear Arch Health is very familiar with: Clear Arch Health  is in the emergency response space and, as a result, we work with more than 270,000 senior or disabled adults who trust us to help keep them safe as they live independently. More than 90% of our existing customers have at least one chronic condition and roughly 70% are managing two chronic conditions.  And now, within our Clear Arch Health, we are working with providers every day who want to ensure their patients are safer and healthier at home. We have found that our experience in  working with seniors with chronic conditions has guided a unique and well differentiated RPM solution that has many engaging features not offered by our competitors.  We have also found that the Clear Arch Health emergency response capabilities address the needs of both providers and patients.

“With the new CPT codes for Chronic Care Remote Physiologic Monitoring, RPM will become an area of significant upside potential over the coming years,” noted

As the healthcare industry mobilizes around new reimbursement opportunities, we expect the HIMSS 2019 show to delve into them as well. For our part, Clear Arch Health will be showcasing our RPM solution in several areas during the show: the Samsung Lounge (a partner pavilion for the tech giant, in Room W224 H), the KORE booth, the JACS Solutions booth and the Tellus booth.  We invite you to come visit us and see how Clear Arch Health can help your healthcare organization leverage new revenue streams while improving patient outcomes.
