As the 2019 HIMSS Global Conference & Exhibition is underway this week in Orlando, more than 45,000 professionals from more than 90 countries will gather to see and hear what’s new in education and innovation around information and technology in the healthcare industry.

And within the more than 300 education sessions, spanning interoperability, personalized healthcare, cybersecurity and analytics, we expect one underlying message will predominate: reimbursement.

With a new focus on reimbursement around remote patient monitoring from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) this year (and more to come next year), the door has been opened for providers to invest in technology solutions that allow care to happen where patient’s prefer to stay – in their homes.

“This provides opportunities for patients around communicating with providers remotely…” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “This is in terms of increasing access and it’s also a great example of some of the efforts that we’re trying to make around supporting innovation. This has been happening in the private market and I think the opportunities and the impact could be tremendous.”

A recent report from Frost & Sullivan summarizes the catalysts that led to this change: “The US healthcare payment structure is rapidly shifting from a fee-for-service model to a value-based reimbursement (VBR) structure, [but] despite widespread VBR adoption, complex chronic disease states pose a major obstacle for health care providers shifting toward value-based care. Remote patient monitoring, chronic care management, wellness tracking, and personal emergency response systems (PERS) are high-demand capabilities to support healthcare and wellness needs in the home.”
